I love that they use Given to Fly in this preview – one of my favorite PJ songs with lyrics that lift you up when shitty people get you down:
He floated back down ’cause he wanted to share / the keys to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere
But first he was stripped / and then he was stabbed / by faceless men well fuckers, he still stands
And he still gives his love / he just gives it away / the love he receives is the love that is saved
And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky / a human being that was Given to Fly
The film is a treasure trove of amazingness for fans: footage of their second ever show; Stone and Eddie writing Daughter on a tour bus; Eddie so overcome with emotion and energy at the end of a show he strips off his shorts (!) As well as insightful interviews with the band members about their history, each other (Eddie choking up talking about his friendship with bassist Jeff Ament was one of many “awww!” moments), and what kind of memorabilia they keep (Stone Gossard’s “Oh a Grammy!” discovered in his basement is particularly hilarious.)
I got into Pearl Jam right at the beginning and have seen them in concert many, many times. They are a PHENOMENAL live band – the movie captures that exhilarating and soul shaking experience beautifully (and made me anxious to see them again) as well as the proof that they are a band that have always functioned with honesty, integrity and dedication to their music and their fans. It made me proud – once again, to be a fan and have given them my devotion (and money!) over the years.
Here’s one of my all-time fave performances – Porch on MTV Unplugged in 1992:
