she liked Imaginary Men best of all

“You just have to see her – you know that she’ll break you in two”

Recently I saw Airborne Toxic Event on Letterman doing their new single “Changing” and it reminded me to go download some of their stuff.

I absolutely love SAM. I listened to it repeatedly today and it is just brilliant: it’s a story song which is so beautifully written and evocative – the protagonist’s encounter with a lost love in a bar and his clearly aching heart are etched in every line. I love that I can actually see this scene unfold throughout the song.

It also builds – each verse in which he sings about his first sighting of her, her coming to speak to him, her leaving with another man – the song gets louder and more intense. You feel the pain and frustration mounting along with the music. There’s also no chorus to it which I actually love. I think a chorus would interrupt the flow of the images that it is building upon and without it it really feels like you are literally watching the song happen.

I am seriously having a love affair with this! God knows I love me some Wounded Brooding Heartsick Boys being Broken by Lost Loves. Here are the lyrics (best guess since I can’t find “official” ones) and you can follow the band on Twitter here.

They’re touring but not anywhere near me 😦 And they will be at T in the Park Festival in Scotland this summer – goddamnit!! You know who else will be there?? Brandon Flowers AND White Lies AND Foo Fighters! (scurries off to check flights to Scotland in July)

  1. Great song, and an excellent video. You described it perfectly. Listening to this song was an extremely visceral experience for me. I could feel the lead singer’s building attraction, love, heartbreak, and, finally self-destructive anger, almost as clearly as if I was taking that emotional journey myself.

You know Airborne Toxic Event played on the Gossip Girl finale. But I completely ignored them, in favor of what was happening between Chuck and Blair . . . to my peril it seems.

I have to say, I was extremely curious about your use of Damon Salvatore in your tag. And then I realized that this article linked to a fabulous one you wrote about Damon and Pacey, earlier this year. Pretty sneaky! 🙂

That being said, this song is SO Damon Salvatore. Nobody does soul-crushing love, and self-destructive coping like Damon. Heck, the lead singer even wore a black button down shirt and sunscreen rings, like Damon does!

As for Pacey . . . well this song is a bit reminiscent of Pacey’s emotional outburst during “The Valentine’s Day Massacre.” Isn’t it? “She’s the kind of beautiful that gives you butterflies.” 😉

    • That’s funny bc The Killers played on “The OC” and last year when I saw it again, I totally remembered the episode and had NO memory of them!!

I had the same thought about the lead singer: “is that a Salvatore Walk in the Sunlight Ring??” ;-0 I see the same parallels you do w/ regards to our brokenhearted TVB’s – but the twist I like in the song is the girl seems like kinda a bitch – something which Elena and Joey are not (well, sometimes Joey veered rather close) I mean, he definitely knows it – but SHE certainly knows she can “break him in two” and she seems to be doing it on purpose. Pretty devastating. I’m listening to some of their other stuff, but so far nothing packs the same emotional punch this one does.

      • OMG! She’s KATHERINE PETROVA. It all makes sense now. 🙂

      • Ha!! Totally! She WOULD do that!! Among my additional repeated listenings today – I love how his voice builds along w/ his mood in the song. So he starts out soft and almost tender, and by the end he’s screaming in agony. LOVE IT!!!
