In return for grace

I don’t like football, I don’t watch the Super Bowl, I don’t care about the half-time show. Except for this one in 2002:

They were lucky to have scheduled U2 to perform long before September 11th happened. There are very few acts that could have pulled off a half-time show five short months after a horrendous national tragedy. Lucky for America some Irish lads had the gravitas, the heart and the songs to make what is traditionally a tacky cheesefest of special effects and poor lip-synching – into something inclusive, respectful and incredibly moving.

  1. always heartfelt and beautiful no one like them.

  2. Hats off to them – they are still the classiest band in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I mentioned this beautiful performance last night during that horrible one. No-one does it better.

  4. First of all, I love the title of this post of course 🙂

So brilliant. No gimmicks, no fuggie fug female singers, no lame attempts at trying to overdo it. Absolutely amazing and spectacular. This is exactly the type of performance you would expect from them and more. I mean, come on, it’s U2!
