80’s Music Videos I Love: Berlin Edition!

Berlin seems to be remembered mostly for the cheesy Take My Breath Away from Top Gun (awww look at Tom all Pre-Crazy!) But before that they were much cooler (embedded, just click to watch on YouTube):

First off – how awesome is this song?? SO AWESOME. Still stands up. It’s one of the first songs I purchased from iTunes. But the video is classic – it looks really cheaply done but is still very evocative; it nicely blends 80’s New Wave imagery and style with a 40’s glamour and noir; it’s kinda a Story Video (which I’m a fan of), but only in a vague He-Done-Her-Wrong kind of way. Plus you have to love the bizarre 80’s “this looks cool!” effects: strobe lights, figures behind screens, salt angrily poured over an Eiffel Tower memento (say what?!)

Come to think of it – Berlin had another great song and a total Story Video (Bonnie & Clyde anyone?) with this one (same viewing deal as above):

Clearly Higher Budget = Big Concept Video! Plus is there anything more fun when you’re bummed about some boy than to scream, No more words! You’re telling me you love me while you’re looking away! ?? It just speaks to the Inner 8th Grade Girl in all of us 😉

  1. Loved the second video! Who knew you could learn a history lesson from an 80’s band? I especially loved the Star Wars-esque dramatic narration scrolling across the screen at the beginning of the video. I actually just recently read the book Public Enemies. And, wouldn’t you know it? The lead singer from Berlin actually kind of looks like the real Bonnie of Bonnie and Clyde! Go figure!

And here I thought Beyonce and Jay Z were the first artists to make a Bonnie and Clyde-themed music video:

    Shows how much I know!

Thanks for keeping me “schooled” Always Brilliant Amy! 🙂

    • Yeah when I heard about the Jay-Z/Beyonce video I thought “Pffft. Berlin already DID that” ;-0
