Adam Clayton is 50 today! He’s been rockin’ that silver fox hair for quite a few years now though. Adam seems so calm and lovely and balanced. I imagine him as this soothing presence among a band full of strong personalities and opinions. He always just looks happy to be there, playing music with his mates, with his “benevolent smile” as my mom always calls it.
If there’s only one thing you need to know about what kind of man Adam Clayton is – this is it: during The Joshua Tree tour U2 were considering canceling their Arizona concerts in protest of the state not recognizing MLK Day as a national holiday. They decided to play and Bono got threatening letters that were specific enough that I believe the FBI may have gotten involved.
The threats said that if the band played Pride (In the Name of Love) that Bono was going to get shot while singing the song. But U2 doesn’t back down – especially not for racist bastards. The song starts, Bono sings, at one point he closes his eyes and sings his heart out and nothing happens. When he opens his eyes – Adam is standing in front of him blocking any clean shot from the audience.
THAT is the kind of man Adam Clayton is – one who would LITERALLY TAKE A BULLET for his friend. So let’s raise a nice cuppa’ tea to Adam on 50 fabulous years.
