she liked Imaginary Men best of all

Bravo Conan, BRAVO

I have watched Conan O’Brien on and off over the years on Late Night and on and off over the months on the Tonight Show. I think he’s hilarious, brilliant, wacky, silly, entertaining for sure. But these last two weeks of the TS and his final appearance last night were really something special.

It is so much fun to watch a show where all bets are off and anything goes. It is kind of how Craig Ferguson is every night, but Conan’s fake “Wasting NBC’s Money” bits, his monologues where he got around bad mouthing NBC by singing about it, or saying it in Spanish were delightful. I know it is hard to say that a nation of people who are down about money and employment felt a kinship with a guy getting a $45 million dollar payout, but I think that it is true. Conan got shafted by his boss, his company is run by morons, he had a platform for two weeks to tell the world just how shitty his moronic run company was and people identified with that. Who doesn’t wish they could get up and say exactly how they feel about their crappy job or asshole boss or dumbass company and get away with it?

His final montage had me teary but his goodbye speech had me sobbing. Conan O’Brien is one Class Act. What could have been a diatribe about NBC or Jay Leno was instead a heartfelt thank you to his employers of 20 years, a gracious appreciation to his fans for their support and love, and a sincere plea that I think should be on t-shirts, posters, and magnets ASAP:

Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.

I am getting teary again just reading it. This man? THIS MAN is Johnny Carson’s true heir. Not Letterman, and certainly not Leno.

It is a shame we won’t see Conan for another 9 months. It is a shame that an institution like The Tonight Show has been so tarnished by NBC’s shenanigans and Jay Leno’s lameness. It is a shame that I didn’t watch Conan more because right now I miss him like hell.

I’m embedding a crappier quality video from YT because I don’t want to give NBC any traffic. Because they suck (see I’m not classy like Conan!):

[Edited because NBC pulled clips from YouTube because, all together now everybody: They Suck. So I suggest the Gawker link below and clip #6. The whole show is worth watching at Hulu]

Also in addition to negotiating for better-than-usual-payouts to his crew and staff, Conan is apparently adding to those payouts with his own money. Sure he can afford it, but he doesn’t have to do that. That is a stand-up guy.

EW has a combo of opening/closing monologue here and a review here

Gawker has been doing a great daily wrap-up and have lots more clips here
