Back to the Compound

I am super excited for the return of Big Love on Sunday night. To prepare I have been re-watching S3. It was such a great season and so much happened, I figured I’d need to get back up to speed.

While I still can’t follow all the twists and turns of everything Bill sticks his nose in, I am rediscovering how damn amazing Chloe Sevigny is as middle Sisterwife and troublemaker extraordinaire Nicki Grant. She’s an actress I’ve never been impressed with but she was born to play this role.

Nicki is flat out batshit crazy. She’s a pathological liar, manipulative, vindictive, petty, immature and bratty. Yet I love watching her. She does insane things like rack up obscene credit card debt and hide it from her husband; steal her sisterwife Margene’s identity so she can get a job in the DA’s office spying for her creepy dad;  date her boss while neglecting to mention she’s in a polygamous marriage or that she’s spying on his case; secretly take birth control pills for years and claiming she got “addicted” when she gets caught (a big no no in a religion where “bringing new souls” into the world is top priority) and I’m sure there is much more I’m forgetting.

But Sevigny sells it. She makes you care about Nicki even though you really shouldn’t because as husband Bill told her at the end of last season there is something deeply broken inside you and I can’t fix it. I find myself rooting for her even though she really is a hurricane of destruction that sweeps through the Henrickson’s life on a daily hourly basis.

In fact my friend Heather and I were discussing that next Halloween we should dress like the Juniper Creek ladies with braided hair and ruffled blouses and prarie skirts. However she lives in Nevada and we’re kinda scared we could get grabbed by Fundamentalists who think we’ve wandered off an actual compound.

Big Love S4 premieres Sunday night at 9 on HBO
