Why: He’s the King of Snark, funny as hell, really tall, wears clothes well, and is another amazing Craig Ferguson guest
When: About two years ago-present
Level of Obsession: Joel is absolutely hilarious on both his shows, and in his stand-up which I got to see in May. Afterwards he signed stuff for a long line of people and was funny and personable and did not freak out when I hugged him for our photo together (which is framed, with my autographed ticket, above my desk)
“Ahhhh!” Moment(s): Flipping past The Soup and seeing a mash-up spoof of the recent (at the time) Beowulf movie + Scott Baio’s reality show called BaioWulf. The cowboy get-up he wore in Community’s Halloween episode. His chemistry with Annie in Debate 109
If you get a chance to see Joel live, do it. The first part of his show was very Soup-y, but the second half where he riffs on his family – in particular his dad the spendthrift and his son Eddie the 4-year-old ladies man are absolutely hysterical. I literally could not breathe a few times I was doubled over laughing so hard. He’s incredibly gracious (and snarky) with his fans and he made me promise to watch Community and make others do so as well. So watch it! It is a still a little green but the episodes where it clicks are hilarious and he’s doing a great job making the character a dick with a tiny, little, growing heart. Also he doffed his shirt once and it was pretty exciting – who knew he had that going on under those skinny ties?!
