she liked Imaginary Men best of all

My mid-90’s obsession with figure skating explained

I am not a big Olympics fan and always say I am not going to watch whatever games are coming up. Yet somehow I always get sucked in at some point and then watch feverishly and you’ll be surprised to hear (except not) that it usually has to do with some Olympian Boy I develop a crush on.

One such object of affection was ice skater Elvis Stojko who I totally loved in the 90’s. He was a little Canadian fireplug with a horrible curly-haired mullet (yes, it was as bad as it sounds) but he was a phenomenal skater. He was really powerful with incredible technique and a total crowd pleaser who didn’t get a lot of love from judges, who liked classical skaters better. He won two silvers but never a gold.

He was super entertaining to watch and never seemed to make an error. He had a lot of firsts in combination jumps that no one ever understands, but are amazing to see performed. He also did lots of free skates to rock music which were flashy and fun and not the same old boring stuff the Russians always seemed to do.

My mom called tonight because he was on one of those ice shows on TV and I was happy to see he’s still a ridiculously talented athlete and just as exciting to watch perform. And that he’s got much better hair.

Here’s Elvis doing a free skate to the Kinks, and his ’94 long program which was technically flawless but apparently not fancy-schmancy enough for the judges.

I think Elvis fell somewhere between my Greg Louganis obsession and my “Sexy Alexei” Nemov phase.

    • No, no Brian Boitano! Elvis and Phillippe Candeloro – the crazy frenchman who used to rip his shirt off on the ice!
