Are you a good witch? Or a bad witch?

The High Def TBS station has been showing The Wizard of Oz tonight. Only one of the greatest movies ever. It is really something else to see it in high definition. It holds up so well for a 70 year old movie and is just sharp and gorgeous and I never get tired of watching it.

When I was growing up the movie would air on TV annually. Usually sometime in the spring. I looked forward to it every year because this was before we had cable and DVD’s or even VCR’s so there was no instant gratification. If you wanted to watch it you had to wait another 365 days to see it again.

So much of the movie is about color – Ruby Red Slippers, Emerald City, Yellowbrick Road. Yet when I was a kid we had a black and white TV. When Dorothy was in Kansas it looked black and white and when she landed in Oz – it looked black and white. It wasn’t until I was a teenager and my dad traded work for a color TV did I even know that half the movie was in color!

Let me tell you, “Horses of a Different Color” kind of lose their purpose when you can’t actually see them changing colors.

So yes, I’m enjoying HD Wizard of Oz. In bright, vibrant, glorious colors and sepia-toned Kansas.

  1. Great movie, and the Wicked Witch was waaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy misunderstood… I mean come on now, you gotta love that little theme song of hers, and the flying monkeys are allegorical for probably every lousy boyfriend she ever had, what’s not to love here??? 😉

Great blog, I look forward to reading through it some more by the way… hope you visit mine… 🙂

    • Hey fellow WP Blogger! Thanks for the comment (you know how we love them!)

Yesterday I saw a Ruby Red Slipper Christmas stocking – it is from the Wicked Witch of the East – with the striped sock and the sparkly shoe on the end. It was pretty damn cool.

I’ll be stopping by to read you!

  2. I’ve never seen the Wizard of Oz because I’m afraid. I keep hearing weird stories about all the coincidences it has with creepy things, like the Pink Floyd album. I mean love Pink Floyd and that doesn’t scare me, but I just don’t like sneaky thing going on! And one of the munchkins hanging himself, is that true? Sorry to bring a damper on this happy blog, but should I see this movie?
