My birthday is in a few weeks – as the increasing number of grey hairs on my head keep reminding me. I love my birthday: I love that my mom calls me at midnight to be the first to wish me Happy Birthday, I love the cards and emails and calls from loved ones, I love presents and cake and parties and wearing my Birthday Girl Tiara.
Last year my birthday sucked. Other than getting a shiny new president (which salvaged the day – thanks America!) it was a long, cold, awful day. You see only a few days earlier my marriage had imploded. So I was not in the mood for celebrating or having fun or doing anything other than sitting in my house all day, watching election results and trying not to reply to all my sweet friends’ well-wishes with hysterical sobbing .
So this year I am doing it UP for my birthday. I was going to have a party but then I thought “I have to plan it, and host it, and my apartment is small, and – eh F it.” Instead I decided to go to my birthplace – NYC for the weekend. One evening will be spent with my new Sister Obsessive on a U2 hunt. Another night will be spent at a Halloween party in which I will be a Bon Temps barmaid. The rest of the trip will be filled with other friends and visits and I’m sure lots of exhaustion (because I’m OLD).
I probably won’t take my bday off from work as I usually do but I will still go for my present-to-myself-facial later on in the week. I’m thinking of a dinner out at my fave local restaurant with my mom and friends that night. Today I learned two co-workers also have November birthdays so we are throwing ourselves a shindig in our breakroom which our co-workers will surely attend because even the mere mention of cake had them excited. I’m also thinking that weekend would be a good time to call in the troops for some good ol’ karaoke and beer at the America Legion Hall.
So I am indulging myself and having a Birthday Week this year. I think I earned it. I think I need to make up for the debacle of last year. And if each event includes cake that will make it especially awesome.
