This Letterman story is really bothering me. I have always been a Dave fan. I used to tape the show each night in high school and watch all the episodes on the weekend. In the pre-VCR days I even had a big notebook where I would write down my favorite lines and bits from the show. Hell, when my parents got divorced I went on a campaign to convince my mom Dave would make an excellent stepfather. Clearly I was wrong about that.
I watched his “admission” ep the other night but I missed the “apology” episode last night. I hear CBS is pulling the clips from sites that put it up which seems pointless. It is the internet and people are crafty. I find the whole thing sad and distasteful. It is the kind of story that he should be mocking in his monologue every night, not confessing to his audience on a nightly basis.
I watch Dave to laugh not to see his personal dramas played out. I feel bad for his wife and son, and I feel bad for Dave actually for being such a dumbass to do the things that got him into this mess. And I hope he can stop addressing it nightly to an audience that seems to grow with each twist like it is some sort of soap opera.
As if Conan didn’t have enough to worry about with Leno’s “Tonight Show Lite” to compete with.
