Chicks who Rock

I have a HellCold and have been home sick on and off for the past few days. That means of course, lots of TV watching to go with my cups of tea and endless popping of mucinex.

I have this very cool channel called Palladia which is an honest to god Music Television channel which shows concerts and festivals and music movies and awards shows and music videos! I am pretty sure it is somehow owned/affiliated with MTV/VH1 but it is far, far better.

Yesterday I saw the European VMA’s which were as cheesy and lame as the American ones. But Pink was on winning something and also performing and it reminded me how totally great I think she is: she’s talented, she’s smart, she’s got catchy songs, and she speaks her mind. So refreshing in this age of sound-bite starlets who only give PR approved answers that Pink will call Kanye West an asshole and then add “you can quote me on that”!

I love her rant on vacuous girl culture in Stupid Girls: I’m so glad that I’ll never fit in / That will never be me / Outcasts and girls with ambition / That’s what I want to see.Or telling skeevy guys to go fuck themselves in U + Ur Hand: ‘Cause I’m not here for your entertainment / You don’t really want to mess with me tonight / Just stop and take a second / I was fine before you walked into my life.

Today I saw VH1 Divas with the horrifically annoying Paula Abdul. HOW did this woman get not one, but two careers?? And can she please go now? Kelly Clarkson was on and I remembered how delightful I find her: she has a normal body type and she doesn’t apologize for it. She was out there looking like a regular girl and not some starving size 0 and she looked great. I also read once that when she first got famous she told her business manager she wanted to “never have to do anything for the money” so that she could be financially secure and only do things in her career that she wanted, not that she had to do. Very smart.

She also has great songs, a crazy good voice (she and Melissa Etheridge did a phenomenal duet), and exudes self-confidence that is so refreshing. Plus Since U Been Gone and Walk Away are two of the most deliciously pop-tastic tunes ever.

Now I feel the need to go to iTunes and show these smart, sassy, talented ladies some love.  And you thought I only talked about boys!

  2. That duet blew me away. What a great pairing. And to see two real, talented women after that hideous Miley Cyrus was so refreshing.

Please do report about the Pink concert. On that VMA’s she performed “Sober” while on a trapeze! And she wasn’t lipsynching! I was impressed.

  3. I’ll let you know how Pink was live after I see her tomorrow night!

The duet between Melissa and Kelly was A – wait for it – MAZING! Kelly’s definitely put on a few pounds but with the company that sang on VH1 divas, she didn’t stand out. And they all looked good! As my friends’ mom used to tell me growing up, I was “healthy looking.” Gotta love the Italians.
